According to a report by the United Nations, one femicide was committed every ten minutes worldwide in 2023. 60% of murders of women are committed by their own partner or a family member. Massive structural violence is also evident in Austria: at least 26 women were murdered in 2024, according to records kept by the Autonomous Austrian Women's Shelters. This represents the tip of the iceberg of patriarchal violence. All too often, patriarchal violence is still not recognized and named as such in the media and society.
Violence does not affect everyone equally
Regional and global crises also do not affect everyone equally. Women, girls and queer people often bear the heaviest burdens because existing inequalities are exacerbated in extreme situations. When structures collapse, they are more likely to be affected by sexualized violence, exploitation and displacement. Girls lose access to education, women to medical care and income. In many regions, queer people are additionally persecuted, disenfranchised or abused as ‘scapegoats’.
A call to action
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence from 25 November to 10 December offer an opportunity to raise awareness of these major inequalities and injustices, to make feminist resistance heard and to mourn together those who have been murdered by patriarchal violence.
